How Do You Get Wrinkles Out of a Silk Tie?

The most effective method for getting wrinkles out of a silk tie is by ironing. You may also remove wrinkles from your silk tie by using a steamer. Find our detailed instructions on how to perform both methods, below.

How to Iron a Silk Tie

  1. Lay your silk tie down on an ironing board or flat surface, with the dull back side of the tie facing up.
  2. Fill a spray bottle with water and use the mist setting to add moisture to the tie. Your tie should be damp but not soaking wet.
  3. Turn the iron on to the lowest heat setting or if your iron has a silk setting, use that.
  4. Lay a pressing cloth such as a cotton bandana or pillowcase over the tie or areas you wish to iron. Never press a hot iron directly onto your silk tie.
  5. Hand press the iron down onto the tie. Do not slide the iron up and down the surface. Simply hand press the iron down briefly, remove it, and then press again.
  6. Once your silk tie is wrinkle free, lay flat or hang to air dry in a cool area out of direct sunlight.

How to Steam a Silk Tie

  1. Fill the steamer’s water tank with fresh clean water. Do not steam your silk tie with old stale water.
  2. Power the steamer on.
  3. Hang the tie with the backside facing towards you. You will apply the steamer to the backside of the tie.
  4. Wait until the steamer is not dripping or spitting hot water.
  5. Begin to steam your tie while using long downward strokes.
  6. Use your free hand to add tension to the tie and pull flat.
  7. Continue until your tie is wrinkle free.
  8. Lay flat to dry or hang dry in a cool area out of contact with direct sunlight.

How to Clean a Silk Tie

Before you clean your silk tie you must first check the instructions on the tie’s care label. If a tie is required to be dry cleaned only, then do not attempt to wash at home. For ties that are able to be machine or hand washed at home, continue reading the step-by-step instructions below.
