Polyester satin has a nice soft touch, lightweight feel, and drapey flow similar to that of silk satin, however polyester satin does not feel quite as luxurious nor does it share all of the same premium qualities that 100% silk satin does.

What is Satin?

Satin is simply a type of weave that can be used in conjunction with a variety of different fibers both natural and synthetic. Satin can be used together with fibers such as silk, polyester, wool, cotton, spandex, and rayon. 


Satin is a weave that uses a 4:1 ratio which sees 4 weft threads wrapped under 1 warp thread. The unique combination of the weft and warp threads gives satin its glossy and vibrant appearance.


The two most common types of satin are silk satin and polyester satin.

What Does Satin Feel Like?

Satin, when made from silk, is breathable, durable, and smooth. Silk satin is one of the most luxurious fabrics on the planet and is as pleasing to touch as it is to look at. Silk satin is often used for pajamas and bedding because it is moisture wicking and has the ability to regulate your body temperature throughout the night. 


Satin, when made from synthetics, is durable, soft, and smooth. Synthetic satin is not nearly as breathable as silk satin, however it does have a similar drape, flow, and look.

Silk and synthetic satin have some commonalities as well as many differences. 


Silk is naturally produced by silkworms during a process called sericulture, whereas polyester satin is a synthetic man-made fiber that comes from the mixture of chemical substances. 


Silk is a hypoallergenic fabric that is good for skin and hair, whereas synthetic satin may cause issues for individuals with sensitive skin. 


Synthetic satin can be machine washed and sometimes machine dried, whereas 100% silk satin should be hand washed and air dried

Synthetic satin has a lot of similar qualities to silk satin, however it does not have quite the same level of quality. Satin can also be made purely from 100% silk. Silk satin feels like silk, because in this case, it is silk. 

What feels better silk or satin?

Silk satin feels more soft, smooth, breathable, and comfortable than polyester satin, however polyester satin is still a nice fabric, and comes at a much cheaper price. 

How close is satin to silk?

Synthetic satin does a good job replicating and imitating silk satin, and although it comes somewhat close, it does not reach the level of comfort and luxury that 100% silk satin cloth provides.
